"Oh, they've encased him in carbonite. He should be quite well protected, if he survived the freezing process, that is. " ―C-3PO's observation of Han Solo being frozen in carbonite[1]

Carbon-freezing was an industrial process by which high-strength[2] liquid carbonite was flash-frozen[3] via combination with high-pressure gas:[2] that gas would then be encased within the carbonite[4] as it turned from a liquid to a solid state. The process was designed to encase,[3] preserve, and entrap otherwise unstable[2] materials for transport,[3] such as gases,[4] in a strong metal alloy.[3] Highly pressurized gases such as tibanna were designed to be safely encased by the solidified carbonite[4][5] for transport.[3] While it was not the original intention of carbon-freezing, encased materials could even include sentient beings, should the individual in question survive the freezing process.[2]
